The Power of Your Words
James (Jacob) 3:2 TPT
We all fail in many areas, but especially with our words. Yet if we’re able to bridle the words we say we are powerful enough to control ourselves in every way, and that means our character is mature and fully developed.
The title of James chapter 3 in the passion Bible says "The Power of Your words" while the NKJV version is "The Untameable Tongue". It is interesting how the two versions summarized the chapter in a very different way.
If you combine both titles together, it will be a warning that your tongue is untameable yet your words are powerful. James reminds us that we all fail in many areas but especially in our words.
Yet he offered a great word of wisdom that if we can bridle the words we say we are powerful enough to control ourselves in every way.
A bridle is a headgear used to control a horse, consisting of buckled straps to which a bit and reins are attached. Its purpose is to help restrain a horse's movements when necessary. it goes around the horse's head, neck, front body but especially wrap around its mouth so it cannot open fully.
So we can see from this illustration how it is indeed true that when we can bridle our tongue we can have the power to control our whole body where we move and turn and the whole course where our life is heading.
James especially warned us not to use our words in a poisonous way. He said that the same mouth we use to praise and bless God we must not use it to curse a person who was made in His very own image! We must not forget the truth that we are all created by God in His own image and we are His children. It hurts our Father God to see us hurting one another.
Death and life are in the power of our tongue (Pro 18:21). Let us make a conscious effort to speak only words that seek to edify and build one another up (Eph 4:29).
The way we speak is a reflection of the condition of our heart (Matt 12:34). Each day, ask the Lord to sanctify our hearts so that the speech that will flow out will only be words that will be pleasing unto Him.
Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for saying things that are not edifying to people. Sanctify my heart and my speech. Let my words and my life be pleasing unto You. Amen.
Blessings,
Hazel Ashley
